Vol. 275 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kerry Ophthalmic Scheme.

119.

asked the Minister for Health if he is aware of the large number of persons in County Kerry awaiting ophthalmic examination; and if he will provide a scheme for the county whereby medical card holders certified by their own doctor to be in need of such an examination may be examined by ophthalmic opticians in their own rooms in the same manner as that provided for insured persons under the Social Welfare Acts.

I am aware that medical card holders in County Kerry, who have applied for ophthalmic services, are experiencing delay in obtaining ophthalmic examination. The provision of these services is the responsibility of the Southern Health Board. I understand that the board are taking steps to provide extra ophthalmic sessions in order to reduce the waiting period for medical card holders.

It is not proposed to introduce an amended scheme in the manner suggested for medical card holders in County Kerry. Following a recent further meeting with representatives of the Association of Ophthalmic Opticians, my Department are examining the feasibility of improving the present ophthalmic services for such persons generally.

Will the Chair in form me if I am in time to raise the subject matter of Question No. 11 on the adjournment?

No. The Deputy will have to give notice on the next sitting day.
