Vol. 276 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Scarriff (Clare) School.

28.

asked the Minister for Education the present position regarding the proposed new post-primary school buildings at Scarriff, County Clare.

Mr. R. Burke

Proposals for new second-level school buildings at Scarriff, County Clare, have not yet been formulated as the replacement of the prefabricated accommodation at the school must be considered within the context of the future provision to be made for second-level education in the area.

Can the Minister say what is the expected lifespan of those prefabricated buildings, or huts, as I call them?

Mr. R. Burke

I have no information available immediately to me that would enable me to answer that question. However, if the Deputy tables a specific question to that effect, I shall be glad to let him have the information.

We may take it that the buildings are stronger than the Government in any case.

Would the Minister not agree that it is time there were plans formulated so that the children concerned would not have to continue availing of those awful huts?

Mr. R. Burke

The Deputy will realise that it is not merely a question of Scarriff but that there are other areas involved, such as Tulla, and Killaloe, in the whole rationalisation programme.

Question No. 29 postponed.
