Vol. 278 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Teacher School Attendances.

10.

asked the Minister for Education the nature of the further attendance by teachers at school envisaged in paragraph 1 (c) of the recent agreement made by his Department with the TUI.

Mr. R. Burke

The nature of this further attendance will be determined by the requirements of each individual school. In this connection may I draw the Deputy's attention to paragraph 3 of the circular letter No. 1/75 which reads as follows:—

In relation to paragraph (c) of the proposals, dealing with supervision of pupils, including supervision at "games", it is desired to confirm that there are two aspects in question in the matter of "leeway", firstly, the difference between a teacher's time-tabled class contact hours and the agreed maximum of 23 hours per week and, secondly, hours such as may be available from further attendance of teachers at school beyond their time-tabled class contact hours.

Does that mean that if there are 18 class contact hours and 23 agreed hours, there will be five hours reckonable?

Mr. R. Burke

No, because the band of hours to be worked by all teachers is within 21 to 23, with an average of 22 plus. Therefore, a teacher would need to be time-tabled for more than 18. We are now talking about vocational schools.

The difference between the 21 and 23 would be the operative hours. Is that right?

Mr. R. Burke

Yes, the first of the two ways in which the matter could be dealt with.

Is the Minister aware that as a result of the agreement between the Department and the TUI games are no longer on the curriculum in vocational schools?

That is dealt with in another question.
