Vol. 278 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - University Funds.

4.

asked the Minister for Education when he proposes to make extra funds available to the university colleges to relieve the pressure on their current accounts.

The representations made in this matter are under consideration. I cannot say at this stage what the outcome of that consideration may be.

Is the Minister aware that the salaries of the staffs in university colleges and the tutorial system, which was built up with great care down through the years, are in danger because of lack of funds?

Mr. R. Burke

I am aware of the Deputy's assertion to that effect.

Does the Minister not regard it as disgraceful that staffs in university colleges should be asked to accept a cut of one-twelfth in their salaries in order to keep the universities going?

Mr. R. Burke

If that were to be the case, it would be regrettable.

Question No. 5.

Is the Minister aware that the secretary of UCD, the largest of the colleges involved, has stated that a large increase in student fees plus a cut in salaries are indicated if help is not forthcoming immediately from the Government?

Mr. R. Burke

I saw some publicity to that effect.

Question No. 5.

Is the Minister aware also that the same provision holds in respect of UCC and UCG?

Mr. R. Burke

I am aware of the Deputy's assertion that that is so.
