Vol. 278 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Algal Growths.

60.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether there has been an increase in algal growths caused by large amounts of sewage discharged into the sea which has created large deposits of drift seaweed which gives an obnoxious smell as it decomposes on the beach on the east coast in the Dublin area.

There is no evidence available to me or to Dublin Corporation to suggest that algal growths in Dublin coastal areas are on the increase. I might add that the report on the joint survey of Dublin Bay being carried out for Dublin Corporation, the ESB and Dublin Port and Docks Board, which is nearing completion, will provide up-to-date information on conditions in the bay.
