Vol. 278 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Taxis Drivers' Petrol Concessions.

84.

asked the Minister for Finance if it is proposed to grant any concessions on petrol prices to the owners of taxis; and, if so, if he will give details of such concessions.

I assume that by "concessions on petrol prices" the Deputy means a reduction in the tax on petrol for taxi-drivers. The answer to the question is "no".

As I indicated in the course of my reply to a similar question on 12th December, 1974, a scheme for a reduction in the tax on petrol for taxi-drivers would involve excessive and expensive controls and provide scope for serious evasion.

In view of the fact that petrol coupons have been issued, could not a similar scheme apply to taxi-drivers because taxi-drivers are faced not only with extra petrol charges but also extra insurance charges? Would the Parliamentary Secretary urge the Minister to have some consideration for these men, many of whom work ten hours a day?

Mr. Kenny

I will have the Deputy's views conveyed to the Minister.

Perhaps some of the Parliamentary Secretary's colleagues who use taxis to the railway station would talk to the drivers and find out from them how serious the problem has become.

Mr. Kenny

That can be done.
