Vol. 279 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Greeting Card Imports.

1.

asked the Taoiseach the cost of all Christmas, Easter and other greeting cards imported during 1974.

Imports of picture postcards, Christmas and other picture greeting cards during 1974 were valued at £830,000.

May I ask the Parliamentary Secretary whether or not he is concerned that a sum in excess of £¾ million is leaving the country for the purchase of these cards?

As the Deputy knows, I am not supposed to have a point of view on a question like that. I am only giving the figures. I have not got a point of view.

Could I ask the Parliamentary Secretary whether or not this information will be conveyed to the Department of Industry and Commerce and will they be advised of the situation?

It will be available to them as from the time this report is printed in the same way as it will be available to everybody else.

Does availability mean that proper notice will be taken of it?

I do not want to get involved in this. I would imagine that the people who ought to take notice of it and I am sure have taken notice of it are the Irish manufacturers of greeting cards.

This is an area of policy which would not be in order now.

Is the Taoiseach not concerned with policy?

The Parliamentary Secretary would not be so responsible.
