Vol. 279 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - School Transport Service.

25.

asked the Minister for Education why a primary pupil (name supplied) from Glen East, Kilmacthomas, County Waterford, who had been permitted to travel by bus to the Convent School, Kilmacthomas, for the past seven months should have this facility withdrawn, thus compelling him to remain absent from school for the past two weeks.

The Department is not aware that this child had transport to Kilmacthomas Convent National School for seven months up to recently.

There is a convenient service available to this child to Stradbally Convent NS, which is the nearest suitable school. It would not be appropriate, therefore, to allow transport facilities to him to Kilmacthomas Convent NS.

26.

asked the Minister for Education when he will sanction a transport service from the Riverstown area to Rathfeigh National School, County Meath.

Most of the children in question reside nearer to Cushensran town National School and would not, therefore, normally be provided with free transport facilities to Rathfeigh National School. However, as Cushenstown NS is overcrowded, at present, I have sanctioned as a special measure the provision of a third service to Rathfeigh National School. This service will cater for children in the area who are basically eligible for transport and it will be reviewed at the beginning of each school year in the light of circumstances obtaining at that time.
