Vol. 279 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Meath Estate.

58.

asked the Minister for Lands if the Land Commission have any negotiations in hand for the acquisition of the Bannon farm at Fennor, Slane, County Meath, in view of the fact that there are a number of uneconomic holdings near this farm.

(Cavan): The Land Commission have no proposals for the acquisition of the holding referred to.

I understand that the question of acquiring these lands was examined on a number of occasions over the past 20 years. The matter was again investigated recently and the Land Commission are satisfied that the institution of proceedings would not be warranted.

Is the Minister not aware that there are smallholders around that farm who would be eligible for land if this farm was taken over?

(Cavan): I am not so aware. I understand the Land Commission carried out a full investigation in 1953 and ruled that proceedings would not be justified. In 1965 a further investigation was carried out by the field officers and again the Land Commission decided to take no action. In January of this year a further check was carried out in the area and an investigation made. On the 3rd March the commissioners ruled: “No further action.”
