Vol. 280 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Inland Fisheries Commission Report.

42.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries when he expects to receive the final report of the Inland Fisheries Commission.

I had every reason to believe that this report would be available early this month. However, the latest information at my disposal suggests that the report may not be available for a few months yet.

The Minister introduced legislation last July to postpone elections to the fishery boards. One reason for that postponement was because the Minister hoped to have the report of this commission and to embody some of the recommendations. Does the Minister now propose to further postpone the elections, and what is the position about legislation?

From month to month we are hoping to get the report. There is no further pressure I can put on to get the report. The job was an extremely difficult one. There are 21 or 22 members of the commission and it is very difficult to get agreement because of the size of the group.

Does the Minister propose to postpone the elections again?

Soon we will have to make a decision as to what we shall do.
