Vol. 281 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dún Laoghaire Housing.

8.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware of the serious crisis in the provision of local authority housing in the Dún Laoghaire Borough area, County Dublin; and the action, if any, he intends to take in the matter.

9.

asked the Minister for Local Government the number of families that are in need of rehousing in the Dún Laoghaire Borough area, County Dublin.

I propose with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 8 and 9 together.

The housing situation in Dún Laoghaire Borough has been receiving my close personal attention since I took office. At that time, the corporation's housing programme was at a very low ebb because they had practically no reserve of land for housing. This major handicap has now been overcome and the present programme comprises a total of 1,044 houses or sites.

Work is in progress, or ready to be started on 108 dwellings, while plans are being prepared for schemes comprising 336 dwellings. An additional reserve of 600 sites is available.

I understand from the corporation that there are 520 applicants on their general list for rehousing and a further 105 applications have been received from elderly and single persons.
