asked the Minister for Local Government if pollution caused by motor vehicles is serious; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Motor Vehicle Pollution.
While there is no evidence to suggest that emissions from motor vehicles constitute a serious pollution problem here, steps have been and are being taken to monitor developments. For instance, Dublin Corporation have been operating a monitoring station in O'Connell Street since December, 1973, to measure lead concentration in the air and a second station was established by them last year in a residential area for the same purpose. Discussions have recently taken place with the corporation with a view to the establishment of a monitoring station to measure the concentrations of a variety of substances at a site in the city centre.
The whole problem of emissions from motor vehicles is embodied in the environment programme of the EEC, with which we are keeping in close touch.
