Vol. 281 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Water Schemes.

38.

asked the Minister for Local Government when he hopes to sanction a group water supply scheme for the Cloonfad-Mount Delvin district in County Roscommon.

The scheme referred to by the Deputy cannot be sanctioned until an adequate supply of water is available to meet the group's needs.

Did the Minister say that sanction would be available when water was available?

The position is that sanction cannot be given until an adequate water supply is available. I assume that if there was an adequate supply there would be no objection to sanction.

Is the Minister aware that the supply is coming from an area which is affected by the demand for the factory in Ballaghaderreen?

I am not so aware. I am aware that the proposal was put to the local authority and the supervising inspector reported that circumstances had changed and that a supply of water would not be available for the group. Originally, it had been suggested a supply would be available. The demand for a public scheme had increased to such an extent that augmentation would be necessary. I assume there will be an augmentation scheme for the group there and that this will be used to supply the scheme referred to in the question.

Is the Minister aware that there is a proposal in his Department for the development of the Cloonagunaun springs which would help to supply Ballaghaderreen and therefore make water available to the Cloonfad-Mount Delvin scheme?

No. In November, 1973, a letter was sent by the Department to Roscommon County Council inquiring whether a supply of 10,000 gallons a day could be made available to serve 45,000 in the group. In October, 1974, the council wrote confirming that the water would be available, but the Department's supervisory inspector for the area called to the promoter and advised him to contact Roscommon County Council to have a design prepared. That is normal practice. Subsequently, the supervising inspector reported that circumstances had changed and a supply of water would not be available for the group. If a supply becomes available sanction would be available.

Will the Minister accept that a supply cannot be available unless the scheme for the development of the Cloonagunaun springs is sanctioned because the factory in Ballaghaderreen wants over 200,000 gallons per day?

I am not aware of the proposal to which the Deputy refers but I shall have inquiries made and see if that is correct.

asked the Minister for Local Government if proposals have been submitted to him by Leitrim County Council for the extension of the Ballinamore regional water scheme which has its source at Eddentenny to (a) Costra (b) Shrewane and (c) Cornabrone; and when he will be in a position to sanction them.

The first two of these extensions are included in the county council's programme of small schemes for 1975.

The schemes in this programme do not need my specific sanction and it is open to the local authority to decide the individual schemes which they will undertake in a particular year out of the capital allocation made available for the financing of their programme.

I am not aware of any proposal relating to the third extension.

40.

asked the Minister for Local Government if his Department have received a preliminary report on the Rosmuck regional water scheme, County Galway, which includes the Camus area; and, if so, when it is proposed to supply this area.

This report is at present under examination in my Department.

I can give no indication at this stage as to when work on it might commence or when the Camus area might be supplied.

41.

asked the Minister for Local Government if there are any proposals in his Department for the provision of a new water scheme at Roundstone, County Galway.

There are no such proposals.

42.

asked the Minister for Local Government when the water scheme for Blackwater, County Clare, will be sanctioned.

I presume that the Deputy is referring to a water supply scheme based on the Blackwater River for which approval was requested in June, 1974. On the 16th September it was pointed out to the local authority that housing development in the Parteen-Athlunkard areas could best be served from the Limerick city supply and it was suggested that revised proposals for a water supply scheme to serve Clonlara, the remaining area, be based on the Blackwater River. These proposals have not yet been submitted to my Department.
