Vol. 281 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Donegal Roads.

47.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will make a special allocation of funds to Donegal County Council for the realignment of two national primary roads leading from Lifford to Letter-kenny and to Ballybofey.

I have this year allocated £245,000 for priority improvement schemes on the national primary roads in County Donegal. I have no funds at my disposal from which I could make an additional allocation to the county council for this purpose in the current year.

Is the Minister aware that a large portion of the money allocated is being used for special roads in connection with industrial development? In that case, would he not admit that these two roads need urgent attention and that in order to do the job a special grant is necessary.

I am aware that some of the roads require a great deal of work to be done on them. Apparently, no work was carried out on them for a number of years. But a very substantial amount of money was made available to Donegal County Council this year and I think the council themselves must decide on their priorities regarding these works. There is no money out of which I can give additional grants this year.
