Vol. 281 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Road Casualty Figures.

49.

asked the Minister for Local Government the latest figures for road casualties this year compared with the same period in 1973 and 1974; and if he will list the figures for deaths and injuries separately.

As the reply is in the form of a tabular statement, I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to have it circulated with the Official Report.

Following is the statement:

Period

Number Killed

Number Injured

Total

*January-March, 1975

120

1,512

1,632

January-March, 1974

124

1,746

1,870

January-March, 1973

145

1,790

1,935

*These figures are provisional only.

Would the Minister agree that since the road test for driving licences has been introduced there has been no improvement in the situation regarding road deaths?

If it had not come in there might have been a great deterioration.

That is a matter of argument.

It is, but we cannot argue here. The Chair would not allow it.
