Vol. 285 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tent Sites.

16.

asked the Minister for Local Government if, in view of the fact that many people chose to have their holidays in tents, he will establish a working party to draw up a blueprint to improve conditions at all tent sites and to prohibit camping on the roadside.

Local authorities have wide powers under both the planning and sanitary legislation for the control of camping and camping sites and the setting of standards to be maintained on these sites and they have been issued with guidelines for use in connection with the issue of licences. These provisions are in addition to the controls exercised by Bord Fáilte by way of registration and standardsetting for camping sites. I consider that existing arrangements are adequate in the present circumstances.

From driving to and from his constituency is the Minister not aware of the numbers of people who camp on the roadside? Is there any control in relation to such persons as opposed to those to camp on recognised sites?

While travelling to and from my constituency the people I see camping on the roadside are not the type of people referred to in the Deputy's question—people who sleep in tents during their holidays.

Has the Minister no responsibility for the travelling business people?

That question is the responsibility of another Department.
