Vol. 286 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Medicines Efficacy.

9.

asked the Minister for Health the action he proposes to take as a consequence of the 1974 annual report of the National Drugs Advisory Board which commented unfavourably on extravagant claims for the efficacy of medicines advertised to the public.

The Deputy will note that the Report of the National Drugs Advisory Board for the year 1974 to which he refers, as well as commenting on the position in regard to advertising, goes on to indicate that the board, at the request of the Minister for Health, are pursuing their considerations of this problem with a view to furnishing recommendations to him. I understand that discussions with the interests involved are continuing. The board will in due course report to me on the outcome.

In view of the fact that matters of health are too important to permit the improper use of advertising as alleged in the report, will the Parliamentary Secretary ensure that the report will be acted on immediately?

I can give the Deputy that assurance.
