Vol. 286 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Use of Cadmium.

10.

asked the Minister for Health if, in the light of the proposed EEC directives concerning materials and objects designed to come in contact with food, which have been formulated by the Commission, he will, as an interim measure, make regulations with regard to the use of cadmium which is often used in enamelware to give colour and which can, in certain circumstances, be poisonous.

The question of the possible dangers to health from the intake of cadmium from enamelled tableware and food sources has been under consideration both by the Institute for Industrial Research and Standards and the Food Advisory Committee.

As a result of information obtained from them, I am satisfied that there is no general public health problem involved but I am keeping the matter under review in the light of EEC and other developments.
