Vol. 286 No. 2

Written Answers. - Rain Acidity.

271.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if the rain now falling on the country contains between 100 and 1,000 times more acid than normal which may both stunt the growth of forests and farm crops and accelerate the damage to man-made structures by corrosion; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Regular determination of the acidity of rain is carried out by the Meteorological Service on a monthly basis for nine locations in this country as part of a programme of measurements established for several years. Observations on a more local scale, for limited periods, have been made by a number of other State and semi-State agencies. The figures available do not reveal any systematic trend towards increased acidity in rain water.
