Vol. 286 No. 2

Written Answers. - Taximeter Movement.

306.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he supported the proposals for the free movement of taximeters which has been hampered until now by vastly divergent national regulations; and if he will press for international harmonisation in this area.

I presume the Deputy is referring to a proposal for a directive relating to taximeters which the EEC Commission is formulating. The proposal is still at a very early stage, and, as it has an optional basis and there is already a high degree of freedom to import taximeters into this country, it is unlikely to have any considerable effect here. However, in accordance with our general policy of supporting harmonisation, this country will support these proposals provided there are no insurmountable difficulties of a technical nature involved.
