Vol. 287 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Physical Education Graduates.

3.

Mr. Kitt, Dr. Gibbons

andMr. Leonard asked the Minister for Education if he is aware that graduates of the National College of Physical Education will be equipped to coach all games except Gaelic football and hurling; and, if so, if he will make a statement as to why these games have been excluded.

I am not so aware. A graduate of the National College of Physical Education must be qualified to teach a broad range of sporting activities and to be specially competent in a select number. The teaching of Gaelic football and hurling skills figures prominently in the college curriculum. The emphasis is laid not only on giving students the skills of these games but also the ability to coach for them. The effort and time spent on Gaelic games in the college is reflected in the successes of the college football and hurling teams.
