Vol. 289 No. 1

Written Answers. - Clare Hospital.

60.

asked the Minister for Health the resons for the closing down of the maternity section at Kilrush District Hospital, County Clare; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am informed that some weeks ago, the Mid-Western Health Board gave permission for the five maternity beds in this hospital to be used for other patients, because the number of deliveries in the hospital has declined steadily in recent years and there is a need to use the vacant maternity beds for other patients. Last year there were only 45 births in Kilrush District Hospital. Most expectant mothers in the area prefer to go to Ennis County Hospital. Most expectant mothers in Hospital or Limerick Regional Maternity Hospital for their confinements.

I understand that one bed, in a single room, is being retained for maternity patients, when the need arises.
