Vol. 290 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Ordnance Survey Building.

10.

asked the Minister for Finance the number of dwellings vacant in the Ordnance Survey, Phoenix Park, Dublin; the period that they are vacant; and why the houses were not let.

The residential quarters at the Ordnance Survey consist of a terrace of eight houses which are old and substandard, varying in size from two rooms and a kitchen to five rooms and a kitchen. Modernisation of the accommodation was proposed and any houses which became vacant for some years back were not reoccupied. Five are now vacant, one since 1968, two since 1971, one since 1973 and one since 1975. Tenders for modernisation works were received but it transpired that the cost would be so high that it could not be justified. Alternative proposals are now being examined and these will be dealt with as expeditiously as possible.

In view of the great housing shortage and the large demand for housing in Dublin would the Parliamentary Secretary agree to take whatever action is necessary to have those houses made habitable and relet them at the earliest possible moment?

I agree with the Deputy. Furthermore, I will contact him in a month when I hope to have some definite proposals.
