Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Salmon Fish Farms.

12.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if his Department will take immediate steps to develop the commercial potential of salmon fish farms using the pollution-free inlets along the Galway coast.

Experimental projects on the rearing of salmon in captivity are at present being carried out by the Salmon Research Trust, Bord Iascaigh Mhara and the Electricity Supply Board with the help of my Department. I have no doubt that, if these experiments prove successful, commercial undertakings will materialise.

Do I take it from the Parliamentary Secretary's reply that the Inland Fisheries Trust are interesting themselves in fish farming?

Experimental work, as I mentioned, is carried out by the Salmon Research Trust, BIM and the Electricity Supply Board. Naturally, the Inland Fisheries Trust are interested in all types of inland fisheries development.

I am afraid the Parliamentary Secretary has not replied to my question. Will he state specifically if the Inland Fisheries Trust are interesting themselves in the development of fish farming?

The question relates to salmon. The Department will take immediate steps to develop the commercial potential of salmon fish farms using the pollution-free inlets along the Galway coast. This is a specific question relating to the development of the commercial potential of salmon, using the pollution-free inlets along the Galway coast so it is not a national question. It relates to a particular area and species of fish. I have answered it comprehensively.
