Vol. 291 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Rail Service.

42.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he has received any proposal for a rapid rail transit service in Dublin; and, if so, the prospects for its early implementation.

Following the recommendations made in the 1971 Foras Forbartha report on transportation in Dublin, CIE commissioned consultants to prepare a study of a rail rapid transit system for Dublin.

The consultants' report was completed in 1975 and was subsequently submitted by CIE to Dublin Corporation and Dublin County Council with a recommendation that appropriate provision be made in the draft development plans for the city and county. In doing this CIE were conscious that a rail rapid transit system could not be implemented without the support and practical co-operation of the local authorities.

While copies of the consultants' report have been received in my Department, CIE have not yet submitted any formal proposals to me in this matter. When these proposals are received they will be examined by my Department in consultation with the other Departments concerned. The Deputy will appreciate that the approval of the Government would, of course, be a necessary prerequisite for implementation of proposals of this nature and I cannot, at this stage, give any indication as to what decisions are likely to be taken in the matter.
