Vol. 295 No. 5

Written Answers. - Public Service Remuneration.

53.

asked the Minister for the Public Service the sum paid between 1st November, 1975 and 31st October, 1976, on public service remuneration.

As the period 1st November, 1975, to 31st October, 1976, is not an accounting period, details of public service remuneration are not readily available for that period and would take an inordinate amount of time to compile. However, the current estimated out-turn figure for the financial year 1976 for public service remuneration is £544 million.

Public Service remuneration in this context means the remuneration of civil servants, national and secondary teachers, the Defence Forces and Garda together with the Exchequer contribution to the pay of nurses, doctors and other health board employees and vocational teachers. It does not include the pay element in Exchequer grants to State-sponsored bodies, universities and voluntary hospitals. That element is estimated to amount to £87 million.
