Vol. 298 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Student Grants.

7.

asked the Minister for Education if he intends to increase the grants to students from the Republic who are attending the Northern Ireland polytechnic school at Jordanstown.

Grant-holders from the Republic will have their grants increased in line with the increase announced in the budget speech, 1977. The increase will apply to the maintenance element of the grant.

Is the Minister aware that one student in Jordanstown got a scholarship from the Monaghan VEC but because she was doing a degree course the enjoyment of the scholarship was refused to her? Now that we have degrees in physical education in Limerick, would the Minister consider this case and permit the award of a scholarship to the student concerned? I will give the name and address to the Minister.

I will have a look at it. I am not sure of the implications of what the Deputy has said. I will have a look at all cases and where there appears to be certain circumstances in an individual case I will deal with it.
