Vol. 298 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - River Suir Pollution.

6.

asked the Minister for Fisheries if his attention has been drawn to the report of a meeting of the Trout Anglers' Federation of Ireland at which it was decided to back the blacking of tourist angling in Munster because of pollution of the River Suir; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware that arising out of a fish kill that occurred last year in the River Suir, the angling clubs in the Thurles area have decided not to allow tourist anglers to fish this year in the clubs' stretch of the river between Templemore and Chair and that this action has the backing of the Trout Anglers' Federation.

The clubs concerned and the federation feel that this restriction is necessary in view of the depleted fish stocks in the river. Meanwhile, my Department have been in negotiation with all the bodies concerned with a view to bringing about the recovery of the river as quickly as possible and securing the implementation of measures that will safeguard the fishery in future years.
