Vol. 299 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Tenant Purchasers.

25.

asked the Minister for Local Government if, in view of the difficulties being experienced by prospective purchasers of former Dublin Corporation tenant purchase houses in obtaining financial accommodation from building societies because of the short-term nature of the leases, he will arrange to have these leases sufficiently extended to put the house owners concerned on a normal footing.

While the extension of leases of Dublin Corporation tenant purchase houses is primarily a matter for the corporation, I am aware that a number of people have experienced difficulties in selling their houses due to relatively short periods remaining in leases. In December last my Department wrote to the corporation requesting them to consider the creation of a new lease in a particular case where this type of difficulty arose. I also understand that, at a meeting on 28th April last, An Coiste Teaghlachais agreed that the feasibility of granting new leases in respect of houses where this difficulty has arisen should be examined.
