Vol. 301 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Local Elections.

23.

asked the Minister for the Environment when it is proposed to hold the next local elections.

In accordance with sections 81 and 84 of the Electoral Act, 1963, as amended, the next local elections are due to be held in June, 1979.

Can the Minister give the House an assurance, as Minister for the Environment, that he will not combine such local elections with the European Assembly elections which may, for other reasons, be postponed?

That is a separate question. I am calling Question No. 26.

Will the Minister give an assurance to the House that he will not interfere with the local electoral areas?

It is not for me to make such a decision; it is for the Government. It is my duty to set the date of the elections.

Is it the Minister's intention to go ahead with elections on that date? Is he telling the House they will not be postponed?

As I stated in my reply, in accordance with sections 81 and 84 of the Electroal Act, 1963, the next local elections are due to be held in June, 1979.

(Cavan-Monaghan): Have the Government any plans or are they considering amending that Act?

Will the Minister tell the House if the review of local government to which he has referred will be completed before the next local government elections?

I have called Question No. 26.
