Vol. 301 No. 9

Written Answers. - County Longford RTE Transmitters.

384.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware that RTE transmitters at Cairn Hill, County Longford may, when they become operative, interfere in a serious manner with reception of BBC and HTV transmissions in parts of the south-east of the country; and what steps RTE propose to take to avoid this situation.

I am aware that, without corrective measures, the RTE transmitters referred to could interfere with reception of BBC and HTV transmissions in the south-east.

RTE have devoted a considerable amount of effort to identifying the extent of the problem and to devising ways of avoiding it. As a result, special equipment designed to minimise the interference has been installed at the transmitters. There will also be extended test transmissions from the new transmitters before they are brought into service during which any interference experienced will be monitored. When these tests have been completed, RTE will determine what further steps, if any, need to be taken to deal with any residual problem. The Deputy may be assured that everything possible will be done to avoid the situation he refers to.
