Vol. 302 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Navan Industry.

28.

asked the Minister for Finance if Navan Clothing Company applied to the IDA or Fóir Teoranta for assistance; if so why such assistance was not given; and the efforts, if any, that were made by the Government to protect the employment of the workers in this firm.

Since 1963 the IDA has made re-equipment and training grants to Navan Clothing Company on a number of occasions. In addition, in the period 1973 to 1976 Fóir Teoranta have provided loans to the company. Further applications for loan assistance in late 1976 and early 1977 had to be refused as the company no longer appeared to have prospects of viability for the future. In August, 1977, the directors of the company asked Fóir Teoranta to appoint a receiver, and this receiver, with the active co-operation of the IDA, has since been endeavouring to attract a replacement industry into the factory with the object of safeguarding the employment.
