Vol. 302 No. 5

Written Answers. - Contributory Pension.

263.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare why a contributory pension has not been granted to a person (details supplied) in County Offaly who applied last July.

The person concerned has been in receipt of retirement pension, which is a contributory pension, at the maximum rate since June, 1975. The rates of retirement pension and of old age (contributory) pension are identical and a person cannot receive both pensions at the same time. The substitution of old age pension for retirement pension when the person reached pension age in June, 1977, would, therefore, have been of no advantage to him, and he has been so informed. If, however, he wishes to receive old age contributory pension in lieu of retirement pension and notifies the Department to that effect, arrangements will be made to change the pension. In the meantime, as he had a period of insurance in the United Kingdom the question of his possible entitlement to a British pension under EEC Regulations has been referred to the British authorities and he will be advised of the decision as soon as it becomes available.
