Vol. 303 No. 3

Written Answers. - Marriage of Prisoners.

271.

asked the Minister for Justice if his decision to permit the marriage of prisoners Gallagher and Dugdale can be taken as a favourable precedent for the granting of similar permission in the future.

The decision in the case referred to was arrived at after the facts had been considered in the light of common sense and humanity. The decision in any other case would be arrived at after a similar process.

272.

asked the Minister for Justice the total cost of arrangements in connection with the Gallagher/Dugdale wedding.

It is not the practice to reveal the cost of individual operations in the security area since the information would be most valuable to precisely those in respect of whom the operations are carried out. In any case, any costing of arrangements of this kind would involve arbitrary assumptions in relation to the deployment of resources. I might add that the transport of prisoners under escort is an everyday occurrence.

273.

asked the Minister for Justice if his attention has been drawn to a reported statement by a British newscast that the wedding cake of Gallagher/Dugdale marriage is to be raffled in aid of Provisional Sinn Féin fund; and if he will make a statement in the matter.

I am aware that reports to that effect have appeared but I cannot see that any statement from me is required in relation to them.
