Vol. 304 No. 7

Written Answers. - South African Team.

404.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs whether he has conveyed formally to the Aer Lingus Management the Government's concern with the Aer Lingus sponsorship of a racist South African team at the forthcoming tug-o-war championship in Dundalk, County Louth, and the golf champtionship in Waterville, County Kerry.

In answering questions in the Dáil on 14 February on my behalf the Minister of State at the Department of Foreign Affairs outlined the position of the Government on these matters. Aer Lingus are aware of the position of the Government as set out on that occasion and I believe that the question of a formal communication to the Aer Lingus Management does not arise.

I would like to add that while Aer Lingus have had some involvement in the proposal to hold the world golf championships in Waterville this year there is, so far as I know, no question of Aer Lingus sponsorship of a South African team, whether racist or otherwise, or indeed of any other team in these championships; and so far as I know they are not involved in any way in sponsorship of the tug-of-war championship in Dundalk or in sponsorship of any of the teams which may compete there.
