Vol. 305 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Building and Construction Industry.

2.

asked the Taoiseach the total number of persons unemployed in the building and construction industry at the latest date for which figures are available.

The latest available date for which the industrial analysis of the live register is available is the 16 December 1977.

The total number of persons on the live register in the building, contracting and works of construction industry at that date was 23,602.

Has the Minister the corresponding figure for mid-July 1977?

I have not.

Would he like to know it? There was a difference of exactly 391.

The only corresponding figure I have is for December 1976 when it was 24,556.

Would the Minister agree that the difference there, year on year, is 954?

Yes, 954 fewer unemployed in the building and construction industry.

With regard to the difference between the mid-July and mid-December figures would the Minister agree that it is a bit puzzling to find repeated statements by the Minister for Labour and the Minister for the Environment that employment in the building industry rose by 3,500 between the entry of this Government into office and the end of 1977? Where are the 3,500? The improvement in that period is 391.
