Vol. 305 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Waterford Industrial Development.

26.

asked the Minister for Industry, Commerce and Energy the land at present in the possession of the IDA in County Waterford for industrial development; and the industries that are proposed for the land in question.

The Industrial Development Authority own 639 acres at six sites in Waterford city and county. Three of these sites totalling 561 acres are located in Waterford city and its environs and are intended to provide for the present and the expected future industrial development needs of the city and adjoining areas. In the Waterford City Industrial Estate almost one million square feet of factory space has been provided on 127 of the 255 acres comprising the estate. The remaining 128 acres is available for industry.

I recently made an announcement about the establishment of a new project on the industrial estate by an American company. This project is expected to employ 110 persons at full production. Negotiations are in progress for the establishment of a further five projects on the industrial estate. These five projects have an employment potential of 850.

Of the three sites in County Waterford, one totalling 72 acres at Dungarvan has been purchased with the objective of attracting to the town an industry requiring the use of a very large volume of water. The other sites are at Lismore and Tallow. The Industrial Development Authority are actively seeking suitable projects for each of these three sites but so far no definite proposals have been received. It is also planned to build an advance factory at Cappoquin as soon as a suitable site has been secured there.
