Vol. 305 No. 9

Written Answers. - Wealth Tax.

318.

asked the Minister for Finance the amount of wealth tax assessed as payable and not yet collected; and if he will give an estimate of the amount of further revenue which may be expected from this source.

On the basis of the latest figures available the amount of wealth tax assessed as payable and not yet collected on 31 December 1977 was £301,957. It is expected that this amount will be collected in full.

319.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware of a bulletin published by a firm of accountants (details supplied) to the effect that tax inspectors have generally been lax in the enforcement of regulations regarding wealth tax returns; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have seen the report to which the Deputy refers, but I have not seen a copy of the "special bulletin" on which it appears to be based.

The report refers to tax inspectors, but the Deputy will be aware that the administration of the wealth tax is not the responsibility of the inspectors of taxes.

I am satisfied that there has been no laxity in the administration of the wealth tax by the officers responsible.
