Vol. 306 No. 8

Written Answers . - Primary Schools .

143.

asked the Minister for Education if he will make a statement on the introduction of co-operative teaching in primary schools; and if it is intended that this practice will be extended to all schools.

: Co-operative teaching is ordinarily feasible only in large schools which are suitably designed for such activity. It involves shared teaching of two combined classes of the same age group by the two teachers who would ordinarily have responsibility for the individual classes. It is only introduced where the school authorities and the principal teacher are in favour of the method and the teachers involved voluntarily undertake it.

Co-operative teaching is still in its experimental stages. It is not intended that it be extended to all national schools nor would it be feasible to do so.
