Vol. 306 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Suppression of Terrorism Convention.

24.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs what pressures, direct or indirect, have been exerted on the Government to ratify the European Convention on the Suppression of Terrorism; and if he will make a statement on the recent remarks on the subject made in the British House of Commons by a Government Minister, Dr. Shirley Summerskill M.P.

The position of the Irish Government in relation to the European Convention on the Suppression of Terrorism, and in relation to extradition generally, is well known and understood by our partners in the European Communities and other fellow-members of the Council of Europe. At no stage has any Government sought to bring pressure, direct or indirect, to bear on us to ratify the convention in question.

In regard to the recent remarks on the subject made by the British Under-Secretary of State at the Home Office, Dr. Shirley Summerskill, I would refer the Deputy to the Taoiseach's statement of 27 April.
