Vol. 306 No. 11

Written Answers. - Galway School Needs.

61.

asked the Minister for Education if his Department consider that a post-primary school will need to be provided to serve the Renmore/Mervue area of Galway city; when such a school will be needed; its size; if his Department have received any proposals from any agency for the establishment of a post-primary school in the area, and, if so, from which agency; and if he will respect the wishes of the local community for the establishing of a community school.

It is considered that the existing second-level school accommodation available in Galway city generally, together with the planned extension to the Moneenageisha Vocational School, will meet the second-level educational needs of the Renmore-Mervue area for a number of years. It is expected, however, that a further second-level school will be required in the area in due course and the situation is being kept under review. It is not possible at this stage to state when the school will be required or what size it may be.

A request for the establishment of a community school in the area has been received. It would not be in accordance with normal practice to say who made the request or what action might be taken in regard to it before the stage had been reached when negotiations in relation to the matter would be undertaken.
