Vol. 307 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers . - National Youth Council .

19.

asked the Minister for Education if he will make an immediate additional grant to the National Youth Council to enable them to carry out their programmes to the end of the year.

: A grant of £29,000 was allocated to the National Youth Council in 1978, to assist with their general running expenses. This amounted to an increase of 16 per cent on the grant which they received in 1977 and an increase of 38 per cent in the corresponding grant awarded in 1976. In addition, grants of £2,000 to assist with a common leader training programme for uniformed organisations and £1,000 towards the cost of a seminar on youth unemployment were also allocated to the council this year. The funds for 1978 are fully committed and I am not in a position to allocate an additional grant to this organisation.

: Will the Minister tell the House whether the figures mentioned by him have kept in line with the fall in the value of money?

: I might help the Deputy by indicating in respect of this organisation that the 1976 grant was £5,000 less than the 1975 grant and the figure for 1978 is £5,000 more than the 1977 grant. That will help him to assess the regard I have in relation to the diminishing value of the £.

: Is the Minister satisfied that the council can carry out their full programme on the money he has given them?

: The moneys are allocated having regard to the submissions made by the various elements. I am happy that an increase of 16 per cent on the amount paid last year is in accordance with the merits of the case made by the National Youth Council.
