Vol. 307 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers . - New Job Creation .

21.

asked the Minister for Economic Planning and Development the number, type and location of new jobs which have been created to date, as a direct result of the establishment of his Department.

: As a direct result of the establishment of my Department a total number of 58 new jobs have been created to date. Of these jobs, 55 are in civil service grades, general service class, and are located in my Department's offices in Dublin. The remaining three jobs, also located in my Department's offices in Dublin, are as follows: one economic adviser; one assistant economic adviser; one personal secretary.

: Will the Minister state if any new initiative, proposal or plan has emerged from him or from his Department in the past 12 months that can be identified positively as creating new jobs, other than those in the public service to which he has referred?

: That is a separate question but I will answer it. The first initiatives were associated with the activities of the Cabinet sub-committee dealing with job creation. Naturally during those early months we concentrated on working out details of the programmes by which we could create at least 20,000 jobs this year. As regards further initiatives, I suggest that the Deputy should wait until we publish our forthcoming Green Paper.

: Will the Minister's Department publish, in celebration of the anniversary of his term of office, a review of the progress made in job creation and elsewhere at 5 July next?

: We monitor progress on a monthly basis.

: The Minister's Department published such a document on 1 January.

: I can assure the Deputy we monitor progress on a monthly basis. We will endeavour to meet the Deputy's requirements.
