asked the Minister for the Public Service the subsistence rates payable to State industrial employees generally, including farm workers, in respect of temporary absences from headquarters on official business; if he is satisfied that these rates are reasonable, having regard to present day costs; and, if not, the action he proposes to take in the matter.

: The information asked for is set out in a statement which, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to circulate with the Official Report. Civil service subsistence rates generally are at present under review.

The following is the statement:

For absences in excess of 28 days—the Construction Industry rate (Country Money) applies. This rate is £20.16 a week from 1 October 1977 and £20.81 a week from 1 April 1978.

For an absence after dinner extending beyond the limit imposed by the Conditions of Employment Act (5 Hours) or the Road Traffic Act (5½ hours) whichever is appropriate
