Vol. 307 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions . Oral Answers . - Social Welfare Allowances .

34.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the number of persons in receipt of supplementary welfare allowance; and the cost of payments to this group.

: At the 31 March, 1978, which is the latest date for which figures are available, there were some 23,450 persons in receipt of supplementary welfare allowance at a weekly cost of nearly £115,000.

: Has the Minister any indication as to the geographical distribution of such persons, as to whether they are located broadly in relation to the density of population as a whole or whether there are some pockets in which a greater number of persons are in receipt of such allowances?

: I have not got that information available readily, but from my contact with the situation I would expect that they are rather broadly distributed.

: Is the Minister satisfied that the amount of money being made available for this scheme is adequate?

: I am not satisfied with the amounts of money being made available for these schemes and never will be so satisfied.

: The remaining questions will appear on the Order Paper for Wednesday, 7 June 1978.
