Vol. 307 No. 4

Written Answers . - Drift Net Regulations .

154.

asked the Minister for Fisheries if he is aware of discontent and protest over his failure to alter the regulation restricting drift nets to 30 meshes depth, as fishermen claim they cannot earn a living under the regulations in force; and if he now proposes to remedy this situation.

: I am aware that the salmon fishermen in some areas are anxious that the bye-law restricting the depth of drift nets to 30 meshes should be amended so as to permit the use of nets of greater depth. I have, this season, amended the bye-law in so far as it relates to the Lismore Fishery District because of circumstances specially relevant to that district. But, having regard to the urgent need that exists for conservation of our salmon stocks, I regret that it would not be possible to introduce any further concessions during the current fishery season. I propose, however, to review the entire position at the end of the season.
