Vol. 308 No. 6

Written Answers. - Mayo Telephone Service.

475.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when it is intended to provide an automatic rural telephone exchange in the following places: Ballyheane, Castlebar; Islandeady, Castlebar; Glenisland, Castlebar; Killyvalley, Westport; Glenamoy, Ballina; Pohanny; Achill, Westport, County Mayo.

Telephone subscribers in the Islandeady and Glenisland areas already have automatic service from the Castlebar exchange. Provision of separate automatic exchanges in these two places would not be warranted. It is expected that Westport exchange, which also serves Killavally, will be converted to automatic working in 1980.

There is neither a post office nor a telephone exchange in Pohanny. Polranny may be the place the Deputy has in mind. Polranny is served by Achill Sound exchange and it is expected that Achill Sound exchange will be converted to automatic working in 1980 assuming early completion of the legal formalities for acquisition of a site.

It is not possible to give a reliable forecast at this stage for conversion to automatic working of the manual exchanges at Ballyhean or Glenamoy.
