Vol. 309 No. 6

Written Answers. - Motor Tax.

136.

asked the Minister for the Environment (a) the number of private cars in the various former taxation categories registered at the most recent date for which figures are available, with comparative figures for the date nearest to 5 July 1977; and (b) the total estimated revenue which motor tax, if still charged on those categories, would have raised this year from the categories inferior to 16 h.p., together with the total revenue raised from the taxation of those categories in the last full year in which they were taxed.

Following is the information requested:

(a) The following table shows the numbers of private cars in the former taxation categories under current licence at 30 September 1977, with comparative figures as at 30 September 1976:

Taxation Category

1976

1977

Not exceeding 8 h.p.

105,779

107,851

9 h.p. to 12 h.p. inclusive

341,888

358,365

Exceeding 12 h.p.

103,450

106,476

Note:

The annual census of mechanically propelled road vehicles is compiled via the local motor taxation offices and relates to vehicles under current licence as at 30 September in any year. The details in respect of 1978 are not yet available.

(b) On the basis of returns made by licensing authorities, which are broken down only in relation to main categories of vehicles—that is, private cars, commercial vehicles and so on—the estimated revenue from motor tax on cars not exceeding 16 horsepower in 1976 was £25,000,000. It is estimated that the corresponding figure for 1978 if motor tax were similarly charged on these categories, would be £27,500,000.
