Vol. 310 No. 6

Written Answers. - Racial Discrimination.

225.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs when he proposes to introduce legislation to prohibit racial discrimination to enable Ireland to ratify the United Nations Convention on Racial Discrimination; and when he expects the process of ratification of that Convention by Ireland to be completed.

It is my view that, as the Deputy implies in his question, domestic legislation would be required for Ireland to ratify the Convention on the Elimination of all forms of racial discrimination, which we signed on 21 March 1968.

Consultations between the Departments concerned in this matter are taking place at present. I hope that these will lead to the introduction of legislation which will enable me to recommend to the Government before too long that the convention be ratified.
