Vol. 310 No. 9

Written Answers. - Radioactive Material.

154.

asked the Minister for Industry, Commerce and Energy if he will make a comprehensive statement on the reports recently of the finding of a container of radioactive material on the Clonliffe Road, Dublin 3; and if he will say whether there are any controls or monitoring on the carriage or disposal of this type of material.

The transport, use and custody of radioactive materials are controlled by licence from the Nuclear Energy Board pursuant to the Nuclear Energy (General Control of Fissile Fuels, Radioactive Substances and Irradiating Apparatus) Order, 1977. All such licences incorporate conditions based mainly on International Atomic Energy Agency regulations for the safe transport of radioactive materials.

I have been informed by the Nuclear Energy Board who are the statutory authority to deal with such matters that they are carrying out an investigation into the incident referred to by the Deputy. The board will be submitting a full report to me in the matter. In the meantime they have informed me that the radioactive source involved was shielded in a proper container which was securely locked and which carried a warning of the presence of radioactive materials as required by the International Atomic Energy Agency regulations. The board have further stated that no person was exposed to dangerous radiation as a result of the incident.
